She fell, travelling through space...and time.
Lianne's next memory was of a large dark-skinned man in native clothing gazing at her from next to a small camp fire. The man stood when she opened her eyes. He was tall and powerfully built, with long black hair that was pulled back, meticulously braided. He wore a bandana with two beautiful feathers in it, a deerskin vest, had deerskin breeches on and some well worn moccasins. A spear and a bow with a quiver of arrows was within easy reach of where he had been seated.
This area resembled where Lianne had been the night before, but this wasn’t
the frat brother that had been chasing her! She remained calm, but mumbled under
her breath, "God where am I?"
The big native looked at her quizzically and was about to say something when someone came over the ridge behind him. Lianne could see two more natives dressed similar to the first, making their way towards them. They shouted their greeting in a language that she didn’t understand. The three of them had a short conversation and approached her slowly.
Presently Lianne sat up, "Don’t come any closer! Where am I? Who are you?" It
was hard to remain calm now.
The native man that had found her spoke and Lianne understood him.
"Please be calm. We do not mean to harm you. We will take you to our camp to
ask our chief for advice." He looked directly into her eyes--his dark brown eyes
held no malice, only kindness. She relaxed a little because she believed him. It seemed that he didn’t want to hurt her, as she lay back down in the bed of grass, she turned to look behind her and saw Piestewa Peak, what the ancients called Squaw Mountain.
Attempting to sit up again she felt feint. "I’m sorry, but I need something
to eat before I go anywhere." She gave a helpless look to the Indians. The one
that found her understood.
"You rest while we prepare a meal." The big Indian spoke a few words to his
friends, they quickly got to work.
"My name is Ahmihadra, but they call me Cliff Hawk," he told her as he walked to the
fire. He stoked it sending billowy smoke up into the blue sky--a smoke signal? His friends had some meat to cook.
"What do they call you?"
"I am Lianne from Phoenix. Thank you for being so nice to me. I had a bad
night last night...there was a party here and everyone was drunk...and some of
the guys were trying to take advantage of the women...a man chased me up this
ravine and I hid behind this rock." Lianne pointed to the rock 10 feet away.
Cliff Hawk stared at her in amazement, not quite understanding.
The other two braves’ names were Elk Heart and Eagle Feather, they said some
things to Cliff Hawk, but she couldn’t understand them.
"Lianne from Phoenix. Men should not chase women. Is the man that did this
here in this camp?"
"No! This guy was fat and had much lighter skin than you," she explained, but
Cliff Hawk looked perplexed.
Lianne asked after a few seconds, "Can you please bring me back down the
ravine to the parking lot after I eat?"
The tall brave shook his head as if he didn’t understand, so she just pointed
in the direction that she wanted to go. He nodded, not really sure what to
